May is National Allergy Month, and the museum has partnered with a leading healthcare provider to help make allergy testing as convenient as possible. On Saturday, May 4, the Southeastern Railway Museum will host doctors and support staff from the Atlanta Physicians Group (APG) for on-site allergy testing. Testing will be available during the Museum's normal operating hours of 10am to 5pm. As an added incentive, persons who come for allergy testing will be admitted to the Museum for free.

The tests, which will establish sensitivities to common airborne and food allergens, are covered by most insurance programs and will be offered without co-pays to Museum visitors and volunteers. However, children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and all participants must be pre-certified by their health insurance company to be tested. A simple one-page precertification form can be obtained from the here (opens in a new window) or picked up at the Museum any Thursday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm. The completed form should be completed and either faxed or emailed to the APG main office for processing no later than Wednesday, May 1.

Dr. Shue Kothari, CEO of Atlanta Physicians Group, underscored the importance of testing by pointing out the effects of untreated allergies. “For many people, allergies are primarily a source of ongoing discomfort, especially with airborne allergens like dust and pollen. These individuals may not realize just how much allergies affect them until treatment rids them of the symptoms. For those with food allergies, symptoms can range from mild effects like tingling in the mouth or slight swelling to much more severe problems like abdominal distress or trouble breathing. In each case, though, the first step toward relief is the same: you have to get tested."

According to Dr. Kothari, the tests to be administered at the Museum are superior to traditional tests in that they cover a much broader range of allergens. "Traditional food allergy tests only cover 60 potential allergies; the test we will be using covers more than 150." A brush-on test will discover allergies to another 60 airborne substances.

Dr. Kothari noted that the typical treatment for allergies, an at-home year-long self-administered immunotherapy program, is covered under most insurance plans. "Allergies can make you miserable, and in some cases can be life-threatening. Why suffer when you don't have to – especially if your insurance company will pick up the cost of treatment?"

In addition to the allergy testing, APG will have a physician on site to perform a routine ear, nose and throat exams prior to testing. Additional medical personnel will be on hand to assist with testing and help the doctor respond to any reaction patients may have to the tests.

The testing is also a fundraiser for the Museum, as the Atlanta Physicians Group has pledged to make a donation to the museum for each person tested. "We're delighted to have the opportunity to perform a public service by making these tests available," said Museum Administrator Randy Pirkle. "Our visitors and volunteers get the chance to be tested in a convenient place, APG furthers its goals in promoting general health management and particularly allergy awareness, and the Museum benefits from APG's generosity. Everybody wins."

Individuals who submit the completed precertification form will be notified in advance concerning their insurance company approval status. Tests will be offered without co-payments, and in the event that a particular insurer requires additional payment the patient will be informed ahead of time. If more people submit forms than can be seen in one day, additional testing times will be scheduled.
